Aside from the layout desing, which is crude, the page's main weakness is the use of the Java runtime environment, which requires a plugin. This is inappropriate for a city government website. Such a website should be designed for all people, which means as simple as possible.

Furthermore, the above-fold headlines, which appear to be the main focus of the page are written very poorly. Also, there is no clear indication on the page that this is 'the' official page for the City of Asheville. There is such an indicating sentence on the page, but it's below the scroll line. The 'home' button is also below the scroll line, and unlabeled.

Imagine that you are an old lady or a cognitively disabled person trying to find a phone number. I challenge you. Hell, imagine that you are a smart computer-savvy individual such as yourself and try to find a phone number, or any useful information whatsoever.

Whoever put this website together ought to redesign it so that is actually useful, or give their fee back to the City of Asheville, so that the city can hire someone who understands useability.

At the very least, nix those Java links and post a phone number list.

20/07/06 17:21 There's a quote from that movie "The Paper" where a city employee gets wigged out about something in the newspaper and picks up a gun and goes looking. At one point the distraught city employee says something to Randy Quaid along the lines of "Why me?" and Quaid says something such as "You work for the city... It was your turn."

Am I rememering that correctly?

18/07/06 20:24 This hits me right in the nerd nerve. It's a Google map showing where different artistserver.com musicians live and record. I've mentioned artistserver.com before on the Hollow Tree Experimental Music page. The site is always adding new features, and this map is one I hadn't known about until today.

My favorite thing on artistserver.com is the extensive use of m3u files. All the genre pages have them, and you can put together your own. I drag and drop them right into Beep Media Player and instantly have a mess of tunes lined up to play, so I can go on to do other things.

* This is more of a tiddlyspot.com issue. Trying to upload, the process hangs. Firefox says it's waiting for 23hq.com. 18/07/06 00:18 Now that I've thought about it, it seems that actually tiddlyspot is having problems. But that's okay! I can edit offline while I wait.

* 18/07/06 18:19 Occasionally I get a bunch of gobbeldygook popping up at the bottom of the page. Script language and html and whatnot. I have to go back to a backed up version, and replace everthing I did between that back up and the time the gobbeldygook showed up. Pain! I wonder what I can do to prevent this from happening in the first place.
